Draft Guidelines for Optimizing Safe Implementation and Use of Smart Infusion Pumps

ISMP’s first infusion pump summit, held in 2008, examined smart pump implementation, drug libraries, and clinical practice, and resulted in the 2009 publication of the ISMP Guidelines for Safe Implementation and Use of Smart Infusion Pumps. Since then, smart infusion pump technology has evolved, and its application has spread to nearly all US hospitals as well as ambulatory settings. A second national Smart Infusion Pump Summit in 20181 focused on Infrastructure, the Drug Library, Continuous Quality Improvement Data, Clinical Workflow, and Bi-directional Smart Infusion Pump Interoperability with the EHR. The newly revised and expanded safe practice statements accessible below are designed to support optimization of smart infusion pump technology and to assist organizations in their transition to smart infusion pump interoperability.
