Guidelines for Safe Medication Use in Perioperative and Procedural Settings

The ISMP Guidelines for Safe Medication Use in Perioperative and Procedural Settings document is currently available for public comment.

Review and Comment

Following an invitational National Perioperative Summit in November 2021, analysis of findings from the ISMP Medication Safety Self Assessment® for Perioperative Settings, and review of the literature and voluntary reports from the ISMP National Medication Errors Reporting Program, guidelines for safe medication use in the perioperative and procedural settings have been developed. Key safe process statements were created by facilitated group consensus, followed by final analysis and recommendations by the ISMP staff. Each process was defined by ISMP’s conceptual model, the Key Elements of the Medication Use System™ and associated Core Characteristics. These draft statements are being made available for public comment prior to the release of the final tool.

The ISMP Guidelines for Safe Medication Use in Perioperative and Procedural Settings are currently out for review. Public comments will be accepted through May 27, 2022.
