Myungsun (Sunny) Ro MS, PharmD, FISMP

2021-22 ISMP International Medication Safety Management Fellow

Sunny received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Resident at Thomas Jefferson University, she first became interested in medication safety after one of her earliest error reports lead to an institution-wide changes to the electronic ordering system. She gained valuable knowledge and skills from collaborating with multidisciplinary care teams on clinical services, counseling patients on safe and effective use of medications during transitions of care, actively participating in the local Oncology Subcommittee and the Enterprise Oncology Council, and assisting with various aspects of COVID-19 vaccine distribution and administration in the local Philadelphia community. One of her favorite projects during residency involved facilitating the construction of a new infusion pharmacy at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center by revising guidelines and protocols, creating educational materials for staff, and preparing documentation for inspections by the Board of Pharmacy and Department of Health. Her medication safety-related research projects included the standardization of medication history collection through pharmacy-medicine collaboration, medication use evaluation of warfarin in patients with left ventricular assist device, and assessment of vitamin K use for warfarin reversal.

As a pharmacy student she completed internships at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as at Johns Hopkins Home Care Group (JHHCG) in Baltimore, Maryland. At JHHCG she standardized the naloxone kits across the Johns Hopkins outpatient pharmacies as the Clinical Educator Intern. She also co-authored an article of ISMP Adverse Drug Reactions which was published in Hospital Pharmacy in 2018.

A native of South Korea, Sunny earned a BA in Behavioral Biology at the Johns Hopkins University and went on to complete an MS at Boston University. Prior to obtaining her PharmD degree, she was a special education math teacher in Baltimore Public Schools and a behavioral specialist for children with autism in Maryland. Through ISMP Sunny hopes to advocate the safe use of medications by educating and working together with various members of the healthcare community and consumers across the globe.
