Jose Nery, PharmD

2022-2023 ISMP Safe Medication Management Fellow

Jose received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 2014. After graduation, he obtained an inpatient pharmacist position at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in which he performed order verification and serviced sterile product and perioperative settings. In 2015, Jose was promoted to oversight of Parenteral Nutrition Operations. During this time, he served on the System Nutrition Subcommittee, assisted with the consolidation of Parenteral Nutrition compounding between two hospital campuses, and coordinated the outsourcing of compounding operations.

In 2018, Jose transitioned to pediatric care by joining the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh inpatient pharmacy team. Shortly after in 2019, he became a Lead Pharmacist at Children’s with primary oversight of medication errors. In this role, he assessed errors across the medication dispensing process, created standardized metrics for tracking and trending errors, participated in root cause analyses, and developed interprofessional staff education. Jose also served as the Pharmacy Liaison to the Quality Services Department and co-chair of the Medication Performance Improvement Committee. These responsibilities ultimately sparked his passion for medication safety and his eventual pursuit of the ISMP Safe Medication Management Fellowship.

Jose looks forward to working closely with the medication safety experts at ISMP to enhance his ability to address medication errors, delve into the newsletter writing and editing process, and explore the relationships between ISMP and other organizations in the betterment of medication safety and patient care.
