Damon Birkemeier PharmD, FISMP

2020-2021 FDA/ISMP Safe Medication Management Fellow

Damon received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UT CPPS) in Toledo, Ohio. Upon graduating from UT CPPS with his PharmD in 2019, Damon went on to complete a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Mercy Health St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio. Damon’s passion for medication safety came to surface during his PGY-1 experience where he was able to work first-hand with patients as a practicing pharmacist. Damon states that the best part of his workdays as a resident always included recommending changes to a patient’s regimen or counseling patients prior to discharge, both of which allowed him to play a crucial part in the safe and effective care of his patients. During his residency Damon actively participated on St. Rita’s Medication Safety Committee helping to evaluate medication related errors and implement systematic solutions to their underlying causes. He also was involved in several medication safety projects, including leading the standardization of products available via override through automated dispensing cabinets. Ultimately, Damon’s experiences during his PGY-1 residency led him to pursuing a fellowship in medication safety through the FDA and ISMP. Given this opportunity as an FDA/ISMP Safe Medication Management Fellow, Damon intends on further refining his knowledge and understanding of medication safety in order to become a better pharmacist that can provide safe, effective, and A+ care to all patients.
