Magic at Midyear: My Experience at the ASHP Clinical Meeting as an FDA/ISMP Fellow

By Avani Bhalodia, PharmD, BCPS

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists' (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting is the largest pharmacy conference in the world. It brings many health-system pharmacy practitioners together to:

  • Network with colleagues;

  • Enhance their skills through multiple sessions; and

  • Learn about the latest products and technologies.

This year, theme for midyear was magic.

As an FDA/ISMP Fellow, I spent time at our exhibit. I enjoyed speaking with other healthcare professionals interested in medication safety. I shared information about ISMP with them, including information about our fellowships.

ISMP’s Work on Safe Use of Medicines Appreciated

I felt joy giving out the t-shirts we made on ISMP Targeted Medication Safety Best Practice #2, and seeing people appreciate our effort around safety of methotrexate.

Then, I had the pleasure and pride of walking into symposia presented by ISMP speakers as an FDA/ISMP Fellow.

Introducing myself to others as an FDA/ISMP Fellow felt great. The respect I received, as a representative of our phenomenal organization, was remarkable. And I took great pride in explaining, to people unfamiliar with ISMP, who we are and what we do.

Awards, Bowling, and Making Lifelong Connections

Dinners arranged for ISMP staff enabled me to meet folks that I had not met at the office. I also got to spend more time with my co-Fellows, and learn more about them.

I attended the Cheers Awards as an FDA/ISMP Fellow. What an honor to be introduced by ISMP president Mike Cohen. It felt amazing to be amongst exceptional individuals, interconnecting and even bowling together.

I felt the magic at Midyear as an FDA/ISMP Fellow! Thanks to ISMP and our supporters for the opportunity to learn from the symposia and educational programs, and the intelligent healthcare professionals around me.
