ISMP Moves to Newsletter Special Editions on COVID-19 Safety Issues

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) is moving to a special editions of the ISMP Medication Safety Alert! acute care newsletter that will focus only on information healthcare practitioners may find useful in their response efforts.

As the world grapples with this unprecedented public health crisis, ISMP’s number one priority remains helping practitioners safely care for their patients and themselves. Starting with the March 26, 2020 issue, the newsletter will move to providing insights on emerging medication safety issues, challenges and mitigation strategies communicated by readers, and links to credible sources for additional information. The first issue includes insight on:

  • Revisiting the need for MDI common canister protocols to cope with shortages

  • Limiting use and protecting supplies of an unproven but widely prescribed COVID-19 treatment

  • Ways to cope with possible behavioral drift due to physical and psychological fatigue

  • Evaluating requirements for independent doublechecks

The length and frequency of the special edition newsletters may vary, depending on the flow of information. However, at a minimum, a Special Edition ISMP Medication Safety Alert! newsletter will be published every other week on the same previous schedule.

The first special edition newsletter is being made available for free to the general public as well as subscribers. To access a copy, click here. Please note that access may require free registration.
