Risk Reduction Strategies for Medication Errors in the Perioperative SettingRegistration for the teleconference has expired.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This teleconference will focus on medication and patient safety in the perioperative setting and will help organizations meet two of the 2006 JCAHO Patient Safety Goals. First, to improve the safety of medication use with the requirement of labeling all medications and medication containers on and off the sterile field in perioperative and other procedural settings; and second, to improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers including the requirement of a standardized approach to “hand off” communication. Information provided by the expert speakers will lay the foundation for how to achieve a genuine culture of safety in the perioperative setting.
Our teleconference, "Risk Reduction Strategies for Medication Errors in the Perioperative Setting," will be held on Wednesday September 21st at 1:30 pm EDT. The 90-minute program will be moderated by Matthew Fricker, MS, RPh, Program Director, Institute for Safe Medication Practices, Huntingdon Valley, PA. Mr. Fricker will provide an overview of hazardous conditions observed by ISMP in the perioperative and procedural settings along with best practices to avoid patient harm from medications.
Additional speakers will be Sharon J. Giarrizzo-Wilson, RN, BSN/MS, CNOR, a clinical nurse specialist from the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and Beverley Orser, MD, FRCPC, PhD, an anesthesiologist from ISMP-Canada.
Ms. Giarrizzo-Wilson will discuss communication (including verbal orders) and hand offs through the pre-, intra-, and post-operative environments. She will also expand upon safe labeling practices as well as present highlights from the AORN Safe Medication Tool Kit. Dr. Orser will focus on drug errors associated with anesthesia care. All speakers will present practical strategies that can be proactively used by individual practitioners and clinical departments. |
