PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Eliminating reliance on the "rule of six" may seem a daunting task. Unquestionably, it will involve hard work and agreement among pharmacists, nurses, and physicians regarding dosing, concentrations, volumes, and methods of delivering drug infusions to neonatal and smaller pediatric patients. However, the benefits are clear: simplified, efficient, and safer processes for prescribing, preparing, and administering neonatal infusions.
During this teleconference, healthcare practitioners from Albany Medical Center will tell you exactly how their hospital, with a level IV neonatal intensive care unit and a diverse pediatric patient population, was able to convert from using the "rule of six" and other impromptu methods of dosing and drug preparation to a robust system that uses standard concentrations for drug infusions. They will begin with a frank discussion about the frequent and serious errors that arose at the hospital when staff relied on the "rule of six." They will then describe in detail the current neonatal and pediatric drug delivery process while mapping out the keys to success as well as helpful tips for facing the challenges during transition from the "rule of six" to a more standardized process. |
INTENDED AUDIENCE (Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to attend together):
- Teams consisting of physicians, pharmacists, and nurses from healthcare settings that currently use the "rule of six" will benefit most from this teleconference. However, with the Joint Commission's emphasis on standardized drug concentrations and pharmacy preparation of drug infusions, any hospital that provides neonatal and pediatric services may welcome participation.
OBJECTIVES
Following completion of this teleconference, participants should be able to:
- Discuss two safety hazards with relying on the "rule of six" to dose and prepare neonatal and pediatric drug infusions.
- Describe why it is not feasible or safe to transfer responsibility for IV admixture of neonatal and pediatric solutions to pharmacy without first standardizing the drug delivery process.
- Outline three key components to standardization of neonatal and pediatric parenteral drug delivery.
- Identify two common challenges during the transition from the "rule of six" to a standardized neonatal and pediatric drug delivery system.
- List two ways to prepare for and face the common challenges encountered during transition from the "rule of six" to a standardized neonatal and pediatric drug delivery system.
