TELECONFERENCE

Preventing Errors With Insulin: A MultiDisciplinary Approach - February 9, 2006

Registration for the teleconference has expired.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus continues to increase at an alarming rate, spurring a corresponding increase in the use of insulin. Insulin therapy is fraught with safety concerns and the potential for medication errors. Please join us for our next teleconference, Preventing Errors with Insulin: A Multidisciplinary Approach, to be held on February 9, 2006 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm EST and repeated on February 15, 2006 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm EST. This teleconference will explore the current trends in insulin therapy, barriers to optimal therapy and safety, and common types of errors that occur with insulin.

Additionally, speakers will discuss how current practices can increase the risk of errors among physicians, health-system pharmacists, nurses and patients. Error prevention strategies will be covered, including improving communication of insulin orders as well as the preparation, storage, delivery, and administration of insulin products. Ms. Bowers will describe her organization’s barriers to effective communication of insulin orders, and its challenges to controlling patient’s blood glucose levels. These barriers were overcome through the development and implementation of interdisciplinary insulin protocols and pathways. Please join us to learn how healthcare practitioners can positively impact the achievement of therapeutic goals and help keep patients with diabetes safe by implementing system-based and patient-oriented interventions.
