As a leader in advocacy for safe medication practices, ISMP undertakes numerous pro-bono activities designed to influence, inform, and drive positive change the healthcare community.

Some of our most influential advocacy activities include the following:

  • Interaction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on crucial safety issues
  • Helping advocate for safe medication use with legislators and policy makers
  • Participation in safety-related panels, committees, and councils, including with the following organizations:
    • Institute of Medicine 
    • International Medication Safety Network
    • Joint Commission
    • National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention
    • National Quality Forum
    • United States Pharmacopeia
    • World Health Organization
  • Holding national summits to gain consensus on emerging safety challenges
  • Publishing white papers, guidelines, recommendations, and self assessments on risk prevention
  • Offering free consultations on safety issues for students and healthcare practitioners   
  • Persuading pharmaceutical manufacturers to correct naming, labeling, and packaging problems
  • Operating Medication Safety Officers Society (MSOS) for professionals interested in error prevention
  • Reviewing standards and guidelines developed by other healthcare and accrediting organizations
  • Conducting awareness campaigns to increase knowledge about error prevention
