Shawn Bookwalter PharmD, MS, MSHI, BCPS

2023-2024 ISMP Safe Medication Management Fellow

Prior to his fellowship at ISMP, Shawn served as Director of Pharmacy Services and developed system approaches to integrate medication use throughout the health system at Martin Army Community Hospital Fort Moore, Georgia which included pharmacy activities distributed over three states. Shawn has worked in a variety of pharmacy management assignments within hospitals, clinical, and community settings over his 10 years of professional experience. A few highlights from his service include implementing a novel Electronic Health Record (EHR), serving as a consultant for EHR implementation for multiple iterations, serving as a change management consultant for EHR execution, managing integration of automated pharmacy hardware, numerous The Joint Commission accreditation surveys, and process improvement project champion.

Shawn’s professional interests include project management, workflow efficiency, leadership, healthcare informatics, user experience optimization, and engineering human factors. During his fellowship, Shawn aspires to develop a holistic understanding of medication safety and implementation of standardized practices to optimize patient care and soldier readiness as he prepares for a successive assignment while serving in the United States Army.

Shawn graduated with a PharmD from Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania, a Master’s in Health Informatics, and a Master's in Cybersecurity, both from Liberty University in Virginia. He completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency in North Carolina and is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS). He continues to serve as a Pharmacy Officer in the United States Army.
