International Mentorship
Program Participants Will:


Benefit from one-on-one attention from safety experts  
  Study the key principles of medication safety  
  Learn how to select and implement top-level error prevention strategies  
  Create or enhance a strategic medication safety plan for their organization  
  Provide ISMP staff with an overview of their facility’s medication safety efforts  
  Observe and learn from other safety-focused organizations through site visits  
  Visit a major U.S. city rich in arts, shopping, and sightseeing, less than three hours to New York City and Washington, D.C.  

Program Overview: In response to global demand, ISMP is accepting applications for its International Experience, a customized, mentorship program. This intensive two-week program* is designed to meet the unique needs of international healthcare practitioners and organizations wishing to engage in top-level medication safety activities.
International participants (pharmacists, nurses, and physicians) are invited to spend two weeks at ISMP’s office in suburban Philadelphia, PA to work with some of the Institute’s top safety experts on current medication safety priorities as well as individually-identified learning projects. Participants will have an opportunity to apply advanced concepts in medication safety, assist in the analysis of errors and selection of safety strategies, as well as work one-on-one with key ISMP staff to maximize their facility’s medication safety efforts. Time will be spent with participants on the development or enhancement of a strategic medication safety plan for participants’ individual facilities/countries.

International Experts:
ISMP is a globally-recognized leader in medication error investigation, analysis, and education, and for more than 20 years has provided unparalleled education and assistance on medication safety issues for health professionals and healthcare systems all over the world. International guests have included practitioners from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Kuwait, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The Institute also maintains relationships with many international healthcare organizations, supporting the medication safety efforts of the World Health Organization.

Unique Methods and Tools:
ISMP has valuable resources to help participants evaluate their organizations’ medication use processes, identify areas of risk exposure, implement safety recommendations, and measure progress over time. Participants will share in resources including ISMP’s Key Elements of the Medication Use System™, Assess-ERR™, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Root Cause Analysis educational tools, Action Agendas, as well as a variety of webinars including Just Culture, and published materials including Best Practice Guidelines. ISMP also offers a collection of medication safety self-assessment tools for hospitals, some of which have been adopted for use in countries such as Spain, the Netherlands, and Australia as part of their national medication safety efforts.

Travel, lodging/meals, and visa are the responsibility of the participant. Applicants must be reasonably fluent in speaking, reading and writing the English language to participate.
