Special Announcement: 2004 ISMP Medication Safety Self Assessment Project

In just a few weeks, ISMP, in partnership with the Health Research and Educational Trust and the American Hospital Association, will be launching the 2004 ISMP Medication Safety Self Assessment for hospitals. Originally used in 2000, the survey allowed US hospitals to gauge their use of nearly 200 characteristics and practices that most significantly influence safe medication use, and to identify challenges and opportunities for change over time. To aid comparison between 2000 and 2004 scores, the latest ISMP Medication Safety Self Assessment for Hospitals consists of the same items provided in the 2000 tool. However, the self-assessment also contains 37 new items for evaluation. We also plan to compare the aggregate data provided to ISMP in 2000 and 2004 to evaluate our nation's progress in medication safety over the past 4 years. More information about this important national effort will be provided later this month.
