Micromedex Pediatric Emergency Drug Dosing Calculator contains discrepancy.

The Micromedex Pediatric Emergency Drug Dosing Calculator, under the Dosing Tools section for ACLS/PALS guidelines, contains a discrepancy between the dose and the amount delivered for children weighing greater than 25 kg. The discrepancy appears in Volume 124, which will expire on June 30, 2005.

The dose does not exceed the adult recommended dose of 25 grams for children weighing more than 25 kg, which is correct. However, the delivery amount does not coincide with the dose. As an example, for a 26 kg child, the section previously read:

DEXTROSE IV/IO 12.5 - 25 g DILUTE D50W 1:1 WITH STERILE WATER TO MAKE D25W; administer 52-104 mL of D25W. NEONATES: Concentration should not exceed 12.5%. DILUTE D50W 1:3 WITH STERILE WATER TO MAKE D12.5W.

It has been changed to (changes in bold):

DEXTROSE IV/IO 12.5 - 25 g DILUTE D50W 1:1 WITH STERILE WATER TO MAKE D25W; administer 50-100 mL of D25W. NEONATES: Concentration should not exceed 12.5%. DILUTE D50W 1:3 WITH STERILE WATER TO MAKE D12.5W.

The change has been made and will be available to Internet customers on April 20, 2005 and with Volume 125 of Healthcare Series, which begins shipping on May 19, 2005.
